EF Education-Aevolo ready for Il Lombardia Under 23 return

‘I know that everyone at the race is going to be super motivated to close out the year with a strong showing,’ says Mike Creed

Our EF Education-Aevolo team head into their final Italian race of the season this weekend, returning for their second participation at Lombardia Under 23.

The race takes place a week before the men’s elite WorldTour version and is one of the season's most significant U23 testing grounds. The best development teams in the world will compete, and we’re sending a stacked lineup of potential and excited young riders.

Joshua Golliker, Jack Makohon, Noah Streif, Gavin Sherry, and Tomos Pattinson will represent the team in the 170km race, and Head Sports Director Mike Creed, who is coming into the event after directing the USA team to two rainbow jerseys at the recent UCI Road World Championships, is looking forward to seeing what the team can do.

“Races like Lombardia are typically chaotic, but we have a number of riders who can do well there and in those circumstances. I think we can thrive in the chaos,” Creed said.

“We don’t have a designated leader for Saturday’s race, but that’s probably a strength because we’ll have riders for certain scenarios, and the aim will be to exploit those opportunities as best we can. We’ll have some riders for the early breaks, and then we’ll save a couple for the finale if the race comes down to that point. We’ll work in shifts as much as possible, but the race can really explode at any point, even at the foot of some of the climbs, so it’s one of those races where you need to be attentive but also save your resources, he added.

The EF Education-Aevolo team made their debut at the U23 version of Il Lombardia last season and put in a dogged display that didn’t end with the result the team deserved. Now, coming into the tail end of their second season, the team is looking to put that experience to good use and race on the front foot through the Italian hillsides that will ultimately decide the outcome of the race.

“Throughout the season, we’ve tried to be proactive and look for opportunities within races. That approach had netted us some really strong performances, and we’ve looked to maintain that consistency and approach during the year,” Creed said.

“If you look at our roster for the race, we have several riders who can thrive on this terrain, and because it’s close to the end of the season, I know that everyone at the race is going to be super motivated to close out the year with a strong showing,” he added.

We can’t wait to see our guys in action this weekend!
