New rider alert: Nathan Cusack steps up with EF Education-Aevolo
Breakthrough American sprinter joins our 2026 roster after a standout season in Europe
November 13, 2025
20-year-old Nathan Cusack had a breakthrough season in 2025, securing his first European road racing victory in Spain, making his debut in the prestigious U23 race, Tour de l'Avenir, and ending the year with a well-deserved 2026 contract with EF Education-Aevolo.
Currently in his third year of studying at the University of Vermont, where he is pursuing a four-year degree in data science, he joins the EF Education-Aevolo team as a rider of genuine potential and a swift finisher who will undoubtedly bring added energy to our 2026 squad.
Nathan followed in his dad's footsteps into the sport from an early age, competing in cyclocross leagues at home and rising through the ranks before transitioning to the road scene a few years ago.
“I started riding when I was really young. My dad raced locally, and I’d go to his races, and I really enjoyed it. Here in the US, we have a category for racers under 6 or 8 called ‘Little Belgians,’ which is specifically for cyclocross racing. I grew up doing that, and then I turned to road about four years ago when a team reached out and asked me to join. I thought I’d give it a shot, and I just fell in love with it,” Nathan told us from Vermont.
His passion for the sport of road racing has certainly paid off. After finding his feet in road racing, Nathan enjoyed his best year to date in 2025.
“This year went really well for me. I had a strong domestic season and had a great ride at the Tucson Bicycle Classic, where I won three stages. Then, I found my feet and started competing in European racing. I got a couple of top tens in the spring, and then I took my first European win on a stage of the Vuelta Ciclista a Castilla y León, and then I did my first Tour de l'Avenir, and that was my first step into the big leagues. It was a really eye-opening experience, but it showed that I could really be here. From there, I’d already been in talks with the team, and it felt like Tour de l'Avenir was a bit of a tryout. I think the team saw my potential, and a few weeks later, they reached out to tell me that I had secured the spot,” Nathan says.
“Signing with EF Education-Aevolo, it’s a dream come true. At first, I couldn’t believe it, and it took me a few days to process it all, but as it comes closer to becoming a reality, I just can’t wait for the season to start and to get underway with the team. It’s a well-run team, and they’ve already sent a couple of guys up into the WorldTour, so there’s clearly some good connections there. I believe what helped secure my move to the team was my consistency and the results I achieved throughout the year. The win in Spain helped with my selection for the Tour de l'Avenir, and that was a turning point. Going to that race and showing that I had the potential to be there was impactful on the team,” he added.
Nathan’s upcoming travels will take him to Europe for the team’s first winter training camp in Spain. It will be an opportunity for the new riders and those returning to EF Education-Aevolo to get to know each other, train together, and make initial plans for the season ahead.
“I’m really looking forward to linking up with everyone. I’ve never been on a team that’s had more than one or two members of staff. It’ll be a different environment, but I’m looking forward to seeing how a high-functioning team works,” Nathan said.
The camp will also provide Nathan and the sports management team with an opportunity to review his race program for the following year and align his personal development with the team's objectives. As a swift finisher, Nathan certainly adds extra strength to the roster.
“I just want to go to some of these races that I’ve seen on TV. Competing in those races is extremely exciting. I’m a sprinter, so although I don’t have the biggest watts in the world, I’m crafty and I can use my positioning skills to find the right path in sprint finishes,” he says.
“A lot depends on how my development goes. I would love to do well in some of the flatter classics. They’re some of the coolest races and ones where I’d really like to do well in,” he added.
For EF Education-Aevolo Head Sports Director Mike Creed, the addition of Nathan to the 2026 team is a real boost, and the young rider will dovetail nicely with our other pocket-rocket sprinter, Alfredo Bueno.
“Nathan has been kicking around in the States for a while. He’s been on our radar for over a year now. I think that doing the Tour de l'Avenir was good for him this year because it showed him how high the level is, but that it’s not out of reach. It put him in good standing and helped him prepare for the challenges ahead. He’s a good sprinter, speed-based, and he’ll provide a really good finish for us when it’s chaotic and a little bit flatter,” Creed said.
“We’ve quite a climbing-heavy squad for next year, so Nathan rounds out our group and just gives us a few more options so that we can be relevant in every stage of every race,” he added.
Welcome to the team, Nathan. We can’t wait to see you at training camp!
